Ohio Money Map

Who paid for Ohio's races?

Where did donations from Ohio go?

The committees that received the most from Ohio donors in , at home and across the country. Select one to see what it is, who else funded it, and where it sent money next.

Which campaigns share Ohio donors?

The House, Senate, and presidential campaigns with the most Ohio donors. A line joins two campaigns when the same Ohio donors gave to both. It shows overlap in supporters, not coordination between campaigns.

Where do people at Ohio workplaces give?

Donors report their employer when they give more than $200. This table adds up gifts by the people who work at each organization. It isn't money from the employer itself: companies can't give directly to federal candidates. Only employers with at least five donors appear.

What this map counts

Federal campaigns, parties, and PACs file reports with the Federal Election Commission. They must name anyone who gives them more than $200 in an election cycle. Those named gifts are called itemized, and they are what this map is built on.

Gifts of $200 or less usually appear only as a lump sum, with no name or home state. The exception is online giving: ActBlue and WinRed list every gift they process, even a $3 one, so small online donations are included here. When this map says "Ohio donors," it means donors with a Ohio address who appear by name in these records. Small gifts by check or cash aren't counted.

Why FEC.gov may show a different number

If you open a committee on FEC.gov and look at its contributions from Ohio, the total won't always match ours. When we checked the largest committees for Vermont one by one, the difference came from three things:

Small online gifts. ActBlue and WinRed name every donor, but the campaign receiving the money usually reports small gifts only as a lump sum. FEC.gov's per-committee figure uses the campaign's report, so it leaves those gifts out. This map credits them to the campaign, which makes our number higher.
Joint fundraising shares. A gift to a joint fundraising committee (like the Harris Victory Fund in 2024) appears on FEC.gov once at that committee and again at each committee that got a share. This map counts the gift once, where the donor sent it, and shows the shares as transfers. That makes FEC.gov's number higher for the committees receiving shares.
Optional small-gift records. Some campaigns list small donors they aren't required to name. FEC.gov shows those lines, but the FEC's downloadable data files don't include them, and this map is built from those files. That makes FEC.gov's number higher.

Neither number is wrong; they answer slightly different questions. Totals on the "Ohio's races" tab come directly from FEC.gov.

Words you'll see

Campaign committee: The committee a candidate uses to raise and spend money. In an individual could give one up to per election (the primary and the general count separately).
PAC: A political action committee, often run by a company, union, trade group, or cause. It pools members' money and can give a candidate up to $5,000 per election.
Super PAC: A committee that can raise unlimited amounts, including from corporations and unions, but can't give to candidates or coordinate with them. It spends on its own, mostly on ads.
Hybrid PAC: A PAC with two separate bank accounts: one gives limited amounts to candidates, the other spends without limits like a super PAC.
Party committee: National, state, and local party organizations, such as the DNC, RNC, or the Ohio Democratic and Republican parties, and the parties' House and Senate campaign arms.
Joint fundraising committee: A committee set up by several committees (often a candidate and a party) to raise money together and split it by a formula. Names often end in "Victory Fund."
Independent expenditure: Money spent on ads, mail, or canvassing that urges a vote for or against a candidate, made without coordinating with any campaign. Shown here as "outside spending."
ActBlue and WinRed: Online payment platforms that pass donations on to campaigns. ActBlue serves Democrats and progressive groups; WinRed serves Republicans. They aren't the final recipient, so this map credits each gift to the campaign it was meant for.
Transfer: Money one committee gives another: a PAC giving to a campaign, a joint fundraising committee paying out shares, or a party moving money between its committees.

How the records were put together

The same person often appears many times, with small differences in how a name or employer is written. A matching model links those records into one donor and is tuned to avoid false merges; for example, members of the same household are never combined. Employer spellings are combined the same way, but related organizations (such as UVM and UVM Medical Center) stay separate.
When ActBlue or WinRed and the receiving campaign both report the same gift, it's counted once. Only the latest version of an amended report is used, and refunds are subtracted.
Transfers between committees are counted one step on from the committees Ohio donors gave to. Those totals are nationwide, not just Ohio's share.

Privacy and neutrality

Donor names are public in FEC records, but this map doesn't show any individual's name, town, or gifts. It shows only organizations and totals.
Candidates and committees from every party are treated the same way. Lists are ordered by amounts, and party colors follow the common convention (blue for Democrats, red for Republicans, purple for independents).
Something look wrong? Every committee and candidate links to its FEC.gov page, where you can see the original filings.
